The Bottom Line:
I would purchase it if you are anxious to copy old video tapes
Like many other people we were looking for a way to copy our analog vhs home videos to DVD format without the use of a computer. We have other Sony products so we thought that a Sony DVD Recorder was the obvious choice. We have found that the quality of copy from old video tapes, (15 years and older) is better than the original tape. The picture enhancement does improve on the VHS recording. However, you cannot make copies of the finalized DVD's with any other DVD recorder (ie. your home computer) so if you want copies of the tapes to disseminate to others, you have to copy the same tape each time, and some of these older tapes are not up to the challenge. Also if you have old movie tapes that you want to convert, if they have copy protection, the recorder will not record the signal. Also the process for titling the segments of the DVD is tedious.
Recording from television is excellent. We found that the picture quality is better than our old cheapo DVD player. We also had to make adjustments for our surround sound, because the DVD player was not recognizing the KLH receiver.
Overall, we are very satisfied, and our tapes are preserved, however, we are still in a quandry of how to copy those DVD's
