Pros Move your VHS tapes to DVD...permanently! Great instruction manual.
Cons Somewhat pricey, can be difficult to setup
Recommended it? Yes

Following my successful conversion of cassette tapes to CD-R TDK VeloCD CD-RW burner, my next project was to convert all my VHS tapes and camcorder tapes to DVD format. Any recordable tape will degrade over time and there's also the concern of a tape getting eaten by the player, ruining it... Read full review »

I picked up the Sony RDR-GX7 at a local electronics retailer this past August for nearly $100, as this was old display stock that sat around since it was released, back in 2003.  No one bit on it for quite a while, so I did - they had several different recorders for the same price.

Pros Build, appearance, Excellent DVD player, excellent recordings in HQ/HSP modes.
Cons 1. Painfully slow loading/writing to disc, editing poor, not a VHS replacement.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought my GX7 a few days ago from a local discount store in the UK for #400... here are my thoughts to date;

The machine has excellent build quality and looks good with its' Aluminium front panel. It is a very deep unit (check your available space!) and quite weighty too. Setup is... Read full review »

Pros Great recording quality
Cons Poor playback quality of some pre-recorded material

I do not personally own this unit - I am reviewing a friends recorder which he picked up in July, 2003.

Recording

This box appears to function perfectly as a recorder - at least if the frame of reference is the functionality of a good 'ol VCR. The unit will create a reasonable... Read full review »

Great Archiver but not a Practical VCR Replacement

Pros Ease of use. Solid construction. Hiqh-quality copies of non-copy protected sources.
Cons Not a practical VCR replacement. Oversize depth dimension.

THE RDR-GX7 IS GREAT PRACTICAL ARCHIVER

The Sony RDR-GX7 is perfect for archiving non-copy-protected sources, such as wedding videos, home-made videos, and tourist-related VHS tapes that are not copy protected. It has electronic circuitry that actually cleans-up VHS tape images, so that... Read full review »

Bought the Sony to replace a Philips DVDR985 that decided it no longer liked the brand of DVD+RW blank disks I had purchased in bulk. The Philips had some nice features as well as a wide variety of recording speeds (from 60 minutes to 8 hours, with expected decrease in quality with longer recording... Read full review »

Pros Picture recovery and quality
Cons Impossible to copy your copies.

Like many other people we were looking for a way to copy our analog vhs home videos to DVD format without the use of a computer. We have other Sony products so we thought that a Sony DVD Recorder was the obvious choice. We have found that the quality of copy from old video tapes, (15 years and... Read full review »

Cons extremely slow DVD disc loading/reading upon start up.

I bought this machine after mulling over the new HP DVD recorder DC3000 ($399)that allows the recording of analog tapes. Well, the Sony also has a A/D converter. I've recorded video tapes from an analog video camera and VHS tape player using the Sony.

It's nice not to have to hook the... Read full review »

A beautifully made piece of equipment but the DVD+RW record & edit options are limited

bypeteblack Oct 21, 2003

Pros Beautifully designed & made. Straightforward to setup and use.
Cons Limited editing functions with DVD+RW and won't record 16:9 pictures on DVD+RW.
Recommended it? No

I purchased the Sony RDR-GX7 because it is a dual RW (DVD-WR and DVD+RW) compatible home DVD recorder. Like so many other people interested in essentially replacing the VCR, I wasn't convinced which was the better or more suitable DVD format. Other manufacturers only offered either DVD-RW or DVD+RW...
