Very versatile with tons of features that are not listed in reviews

Pros A/D converter for analog archiving, handles more DVD formats than others.
Cons extremely slow DVD disc loading/reading upon start up.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Buy it for its many features that are not found on other DVD recorders, and if you have other Sony products to hook it up with.
I bought this machine after mulling over the new HP DVD recorder DC3000 ($399)that allows the recording of analog tapes. Well, the Sony also has a A/D converter. I've recorded video tapes from an analog video camera and VHS tape player using the Sony.

It's nice not to have to hook the Sony up to a computer to get it working, like in the HP DVD recorder that just came out. It's essentially a stand-alone settop DVD player/recorder with video editing features that obviate the need for connection to a PC. I can record from my Sony digital video camera with a single press of a button on the DVD recorder connect to the videocam through i.Link.

The part I don't like about this machine is that it takes a long long time to read a recordable DVD disc. Also, it does not play MP3, VCD, etc. However, it works so well with the discs it's designed for.

As for the price, The $539 I paid isn't too bad for all the features I need that can't be found on other DVD recorder machines currently available. One would say that a Panasonic DVD recorder with a 80gig HD would be better. Well, I'd say that there are features on the Sony that I find useful that the Panasonic doesn't have. You just have to do a careful comparison of the features of the machines you're interested in before making your final decision. You could also wait for future machines to come out that could make your bed too.

Someone mentioned that its video quality is that of a $60 DVD player. Well, I think that person must have played it on an interlaced TV (not progressive). I must say that the quality is indistinguishable from that of my Panasonic DVD-H1000 machine. Both my Panasonic and Sony are hooked up to a Sony XBR800 widescreen TV through a component input. Its progressive output is clearly superior to non-progressive output (there is a button that you can switch progressive output on/off).

Good luck finding the right DVD recorder for your needs.
