SCD-C333ES -Excellent buy
Pros
Excellent open sound quality on CDs and SACDs. Includes an excellent variable digital filter.
Cons
Unit lacks a "fast" fast forward through tunes.

The Bottom Line:
Excellent player for CD's and SACDs (betters the current Sony line up sound). Most flexible digital filtering system ever produced.
I own this unit and the high end SCD-777ES. Both units sound superb on CDs and SACDs. I believe both units have identical converters and digital filters. The real differences are in build quality, the transport and the analogue stage.
I will focus on the differences. The SCD-777ES weighs an incredible 55 plus pounds and is difficult to lift and locate because of the weight and top loading. It is slow to access tracks and lacks a headphone jack for late night private listening. The sound, in my opinion is hard to beat and I've got friends with high end Linn and Wadia players and we have made comparisons. The 777 is very open, produces excellent ambience and low level detail with strong dynamics and bass impact.
Now for the SCD C333ES. Believe it or not, the 333 sounds superb compared to the other players. Ambience and detail are excellent and the variable digital fliter allows the unit, just like the 777 to emulate the Wadia players, in many aspects.
The SCD C333ES has less dynamic impact, a more laid back presentation, and very slightly less ambience than the SCD777ES. The width and depth of the image are "slightly" smaller than the 777. In my book the SCD C333ES is sonically better on CDs than Sony's new multi channel product line, as is the SCD 777ES, based on my in store comparisons. My long term observations have been made on a tube preamp, with a high powered MOSFET amp driving electrostatics. I beleive this provides a pretty "clear" system to reveal these differences.
