New life to VHS

Pros High quality, many functions
Cons None to speak of
Recommended it? Yes
I admit to being a snob about audio-video equipment. Hell, I was the kid that the teacher would make hook up components for the class room. As such, I've found a real home with Sony Products. I knew that a DVD player was just around the corner when buying this, so I didn't want to go overboard (i.e. buying s-vhs or spending $400). At the same time, I wanted something with quality video. I've got over a hundred videos, several of which have been viewed nigh upon a thousand times it seems. So, I wanted something that would yield the highest possible quality.

Features of the 998:

1. Great stereo sound. Although this shouldn't even be mentioned, I've used several VCR's in a surround environment that never produced the proper distribution of sound to all speakers. I know this not to be a problem affecting the tape or stereo receiver through meticulous testing.

2. VCR+ and 7day advance programming. I've never had the patience (or that matter the TV guide) to set up the VCR+, it was a nice addition to the product. The programming is simple (yes, my VCR has never flashed 12:00) and will store up to 28 or so titles for recording. I've never tested that many, as I hardly ever record a thing.

3. A really cool remote. Not only does it function perfectly with the television but it will adjust the volume of the receiver. Great for watching movies, when the lights are out, you don't have to find multiple remote controlls. Speaking of lights out, the key pad is glow in the dark. How bright it lights up is dependant on how long it's been in direct light.

4. Video editing. This VCR allows you to dub from several sources, both audio and video, onto a tape. I've played with this function with home movies of a friend's band and it's quite simple and fun.

5. Video jog. Ever wanted to see a particular scene in slow motion? You can pause the movie and go frame by frame. I made my friend watch the head explosion in scanners about 15 times like this.

One note... don't ever lose the remote. Many of the functions of the VCR can only be done through the remote, programming, editing, SAP, etc.
