So close, yet so far

The Bottom Line:  I wouldn't get this if you need/want cable-ready, use with an old tv, or as a backup VCR.
When I first saw this in 6th Avenue, for only $76, I was thrilled. The 10 year old VCR I had been using with the 20 year old TV for my kid's room had begun eating their tapes.

And a day without Thomas' Tunes is a day in hell.

So I went to buy a new VCR. When I saw the door lock, I was thrilled - the 1 year old had taken to sticking everything, including his hands, inside the doors of the VCR, and the latch was simple enough that my 3 year old would be able to figure it out. The VCR itself was kid-colored, with big green buttons, and the remote control was also kid-friendly.

When I brought the unit home, though, I found out it wasn't cable ready. As other reviews have pointed out, it only has line in recording, which didn't bother me, but you could only hook up the line out using RCA video jacks.

If you're like me, you haven't bought $500 TVs for your newborns to destroy, and have been using the hand-me-downs. These don't typically have RCA jacks at all. And if you are using your main TV for the kids, the RCA jacks you do have are used up by other stereo components.

Not being cable ready also means that if you rely on your VCR to get those extra 118 channels, this one won't do it for you.

While I loved the kids features, for the same price I was able to get a full-function VCR, and buy the safety attachment for the door. The remote isn't as nice, but the 3 year old has already figured it out.
