VCRs Will Never Die

Pros Price, Quality
Cons Not DVD Quality Picture
Recommended it? Yes

There is one simple reason that VCR's will continue to be a hot product well into the future. The reason is that everyone loves being able to tape their favorite soap opera during the day or maybe that one episode of survivor that they may have otherwise missed. Until such time as DVD recording becomes possible/affordable, the VCR will continue to be the second most owned piece of electronic equipment, right behind the television.

Having recently moved out on my own for the first time I was faced with the decision of whether to purchase a DVD player or a VCR. Obviously DVD's will provide a significant improvement in picture clarity, however I did not believe that this increased quality was enough of a factor to outweigh the loss of recording capability, not to mention that you can still rent a "non-new-release" video at Blockbuster for a buck while a DVD will cost nearly $5.

Thus, the decision was simple for me. I was then faced with the question of which VCR to purchase. As anyone who has read any of my other reviews already knows, I have always been very partial to Sony. I have always been impressed with the quality of their products. They always seem to be on the cutting edge of technology and have always been extremely reliable and durable.

Sony had several VCRs on the market, however one caught my eye in particular. The SLV-M10HF seemed to be a perfect choice for me. It is a solid VCR, with quality picture resolution at a very reasonable price. In addition, the front A/V inputs make for easy transfer of video from my camcorder or for hookup of an external game system.

This VCR is perfect for those looking to wait a bit for DVDs to get cheaper or better (although neither is likely to happen) or for those who don't feel the need to shell out the extra bucks for the improved picture quality. I recommend using VCRs for recording and basic video viewing, and saving your money until you really feel the need to let go of your cash for a DVD. There is really no point in paying a lot of money for a high-end VCR because its picture quality still won't be as good as a DVD.
