This is just the first day with my new Sony, and I can already tell it's a winner. I tried several VCR's from Best Buy. Before opening the box I'd check epinions, and they all had bad reviews.
It's hard to find VCR's these days. The last VCR I got from Best Buy, it was a cheap Magnavox that lasted about a year. When it locked up I took the lid off and noticed that the tape always sits on the head, even in fast forward and rewind. I think VCR's of this type are indicated by a single stop/eject button. I've noticed that most VCR's today are of this type. The Sony has separate stop and eject buttons. Pressing the stop button stops and moves it away from the VCR's playback/record head.
