Think I might return this

Pros I'm sure it's quite rugged and reliable, but I only got it this afternoon.
Cons Excessive motor noise, no line out, evil beeps, wimpy output.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  OK if you like ear-buds. Not much use for driving headphones or stereo gear.
Disappointed. Like so much Sony gear, it's physically noisy, making even stranger whirring noises than my minidisc player. It beeps. At least you can turn the beep off - but will it stay off when I change the batteries? Why would anyone want these beeps? I don't get it. It has no line-out, unlike my old discman. In theory this should be just an annoyance - you should be able to get a reasonable approximation to line level by turning the volume up - but no, the volume doesn't really go up very far at all, so if you want decent sound out of it you had better have a really good quality amp to plug it into, otherwise you'll get a whole lot of noise. My Sony minidisc also has this problem - it's useless for running into a mixer - but at least it will drive headphones OK. The killer with this MP3CD player is that it might be loud enough for little ear buds, but it's nowhere near loud enough to drive proper headphones at a reasonable volume - and I'm not into going deaf or annoying people on busses. It's just plain wimpy. Maybe Sony are afraid of being sued for deafening people, but this product is really not what I need.
