The Bottom Line:
for anyone looking for a good portable music solution which can hold LOTS of music, this is a great chioce.
I recently bought the D-NE500 as a cheep replacement to my older early model Minidisc player which is very out of date at this time.
My first impression was that it looks and feel a lot nicer than older Sony CD Walkman models that used to sell at or around this price.
There are many features, I love the Parametric sound equalizer. using the dot matrix screen it allows you to customize the settings, low, mid and high range in the audio your listening to. The skip protection is more than sufficient, I can't make it skip. I don't know what the earphones are like unfortunately because I have a pair which I bought separately and use, besides the Canadian and US models come with different types of headphones. The Walkman has MANY play modes, some which I don't think I would ever use.
To those who do not know about ATRAC3Plus compression technology from Sony. It's great. research groups show that an Atrac3Plus file recorded at 48kbps is as high quality as a MP3 at about 128kbps. It really is truly amazing how they can compress a file without affecting the sound quality like that. Therefore I can hold a LOT more music on my CD-Rom, up to 490 songs!! The management of the files is pretty easy and the Walkman has a jog-dial on the front for easy scrolling thru play lists and menus.
When it comes to portable audio I am very critical of things, one thing I do not like about this Walkman is the remote control with the hook. I prefer the clip type that I can just clip on my bag or whatever. Another thing is that the buttons on the unit seam slightly too small to use comfortably all the time.
