Sony should reconsider ATRAC3plus and SCSM format
Pros
Excellent battery life, sound quality excellent, small compact deign with G-shock protection.
Cons
SonicStage, cannot convert ATRAC to MP3 or wav, Sony music store only sells ATRAC songs.

No
The Bottom Line:
I rate this low with much pain. I think the Hi-MD format is a great idea, but the restrictions are so bad that you are steered away.
As I am writing this, I have returned the player and exchanged for a jukebox player, but I felt that there were things that needed mention with this player.
Sony, being a big member of RIAA, uses a copyright protection format called SCSM (serial copy system management). Basically, it restricts the amount of times you can "check out" a song from your computer. You have to check the song in or you will lock out the song after 3 copies out. This is a big hastle.
Another thing is that the player converts WAV, MP3, etc to ATRAC3plus (Sony proprietary format), but there is no reverse conversion.
Uploading to the player is a hastle because it has to convert every song to ATRAC, and it is time consuming. The only way around this is to convert all your music files to ATRAC, but then you are subject to the SCSM crap.
The 1GB disc are impossible to find, and the only way you can purchase them is on the net. You can use regular MD discs, but they only hold 300MB.
I had some software issues and called Sony support; besides a software upgrade (which didn't help) there was nothing that could be done. After 6 hours of the computer not reading the player, I gave in and exchanged for a juke-box.
The Hi-MD format is an excellent idea, but if Sony is going to institute such control over songs, forget it!
