The Bottom Line:
This radio is a great investment for sports fans, both players and spectators.
I love sports, and I really enjoy exercising. When I am out walking or running, I like to be able to listen to music or talk radio. Unfortunately, it is difficult to carry a traditional Walkman unit while you are running. A headset model works much better. As you can imagine, your headset has to be tough. Between the jarring motion of the running and the sweat pouring off of your head, the unit has to be able to withstand a good deal. After going through several lesser models, I settled on the Sony SRF-HM55 Sports Walkman unit. It has been a great investment.
The unit itself looks rugged. It comes in the traditional Sony Sports style, with the bright yellow color and gray accent. The earpieces are not the foam that you would find on many models, but rather a plastic piece with a rubber cover that is soft and comfortable. This earpiece is able to move as you run. The back of the headphones has a plastic piece along the back to help hold the headphones in place. On the side of the unit you will find a short antenna, which allows the unit to get better reception than other portable radios you may find.
The radio controls are great as well. You have AM and FM capacity on this radio, complete with a digital dial to use when finding channels. This is really nice when you are looking for a station in an unfamiliar area ? you are able to dial directly on to a frequency instead of trying to get close with a traditional radio dial. The LED display also has a clock function, so you can quickly check the time if you are not wearing a watch. It also features a battery life indicator, which will help prevent losing your radio in the middle of a workout or event. The unit requires two AA batteries, and will run around 25 to 30 hours before a change is needed.
As I said before, this unit is made for hard use. The unit has a water-resistant case made of heavy-duty plastic that is great for both indoor and outdoor use. The radio uses rubber gaskets and bushings and resistant seals that are designed to keep out water, moisture, and dirt. If you are going to be wearing this to walk or run, this means that the radio will not wear out quickly because of sweat. I have worn this radio while sweating, and even in the rain, and it still works just as well as when I took it out of the box.
This is a Sony product, so you can expect high quality sound and construction. The unit has a special tuning system that helps lock in the most powerful signal. This is a problem when you are between two stations that share a frequency, as the radio may pick one up based on the signal regardless of which one is closer. The radio also seems to have less static than most that I listen to, which is a regular feature in the Sony Walkman line. They try to minimize the distortion level in their tuners.
After using this radio for several years, I can recommend it fully. The performance is great, and the product is able to withstand whatever use you can think of. While the price may be higher than comparable units, I have found that this one stands the test of time, and will last much longer than the cheaper brands. Whether you want this radio for walking and jogging, or listening to a game at the baseball park, you will find that this Sony SRF-HM55 is worth getting.
