What a great deal. Like finding an art treasure at a garage sale
Pros
Clear, crisp, undistorted, full range.
Cons
got to "push" the bass. (not a problem for home theater use)
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
There may be other better speakers that sound this good--BUT NOT ANYWHERE NEAR THIS PRICE.
I have a Kenwood home theater receiver that came with adequate matched speakers. I was ok with them till I heard a friend's paradigm front speakers. No way can I afford what he paid though...talk about sticker shock! I ran across these Sony's in a Rex Appliance store for $36.00 apiece. I took them home expecting disappointment. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!
Home Theater: If you are looking for good front speakers, you won't find any better for 3 times the $. The clarity and depth of the mid range is astounding. The highs are even better. I am not an audiophile but I swear the noise coming from these does not sound like it's coming from the boxes. I heard things from the DVD "Master and Commander" that I hadn't noticed before. My friend was impressed too. He would never admit to it, but I think they sound better than his. CAUTION: you may need to change the placement. I found they sound better when not separated as far as the Kenwood's. My room is 20x14. normally I place the fronts 13 feet apart and sit 14 feet away. These sounded better at 11 feet. The other thing is that they are a little big. Bass is not an issue on most home theaters because a subwoofer usually takes care of that. Also, you should ALWAYS set your front speakers to "small" and cross over anything below 80hz to your sub.
STEREO: I put on a jazz sax CD. "Holy Moly" came out of my mouth twice. What detail. If it was a camera it would be 5 mega pixels for sure. There was something missing though...the acoustic bass was not that strong. It was probably true, but I like that 50 to 100hz range more amplified (I figured out the range by playing with an equalizer on my computer). A simple adjustment on the subwoofer crossover took care of that.
IN CONCLUSION: Make these your front speakers and you won't be Sorry. Get them for your stereo and add a $75 Subwoofer--you will have a kick-butt system. And there's the thrill of getting them CHEAP! Once I found a down sleeping bag at garage sale for $7.00. Finding the Sony's SS-MB350H's for $72 felt kind of like that.
