Good for the bucks
Pros
Good receiver for the money but better would be the sony str985
Cons
Wasn't impressed with the remote(Doesn't have learning ability, can't control everything on the receiver).
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Go for it, if you can get it for around $250. Otherwise go for a str985.
I recently bought this receiver, after doing so much of Research for a week. I'm not a great audio buff. But I was getting this receiver for my Bose Home Theater Speakers System which was gifted. Well, first of all if you're planning to buy something for a small-medium sized room and would like a great quality surround sound for 1 room and if you're keen on how much you want to spend, this is it. I got it for around $260 on the internet. However if you buy it at retail stores, you will end up paying more than $400 for this. In that case, its not worth it. Its got all the dolby features that is required. It also has a virtual 6.1 matrix feature which will allow you to connect 2 more surround back speakers (I haven't done that yet. The current sound is already too much for my small living room) apart from the existing surround speakers you have. Quality is excellent. Enough optical inputs (4) 1 digital co-axial. However later I did some research and found that going for STR985 will be good rather than this model. This model doesn't have multi room hookup functionality. But it has a A/B switching for a second front right left for a different room. The remote that comes with this model is stupid. It doesn't control many thing on the receiver. However you can add other remotes to this (lacking few functionalities of other remotes). It can't learn either. But the remote on the STR985 is great. You can teach it and also program macros. And STR985 is a real 6.1. So for another $100 or $150, str985 will be great for you. Even if you're not planning to use all the functionalities now, it will help you for upgrades in the future. So str885 is good for the buck like I said depends on how much you pay. But for less than $400 if you can get a str985 its wonderful.
