Excellent unit!
Pros
Solid sound,
Cons
Remote, volume adjustment via remote touchy.
Recommended it?
Yes
I finally jumped into the Home Theatre arena and felt that the ES series would be the best choice personally. I have owned an ES CD player from Sony for over 12 years, and it has never failed me. I love the looks of this unit with the flip down front panel. The controls are easy to use, with the least used ones hidden behind the cover. The display can be dimmed, although not completely off as with other units I've seen.
I wish though that the volume could be adjusted more accurately via the remote. The display shows the -dB's of the setting, but jumps by two's or three's with each press of the remote button. Turning the knob on the unit works better for finer adjustments. If only Sony had a setting that allowed us to adjust the level of change for this.
The sound is full and neutral through my Celestion's. I don't feel that it adds or takes away anything from the input source. (Other opinions will surely differ.) The receiver gives the impression that it has plenty of room to breathe while driving the speakers. Openness? Compared to other units I've used in the past, they sounded a bit more restricted.
I bought it locally from the Good Guys, though as an open box buy. The same warranty applies, a full five years. The price therefore is comparable to what most internet stores sell it for. (I am sure the Good Guys is still making money on this even though it was 'used'.)
I highly recommend this receiver, but not at the list price. I think Sony should allow dealers room to drop the price in brick and mortar places as compared to e-tailers.
