Features and Quality for an Unprecedented Price

Pros MP3, Color change, *120db S/N, CD Text, 3 preamp outs, Very capable for $200
Cons ...No video? It's hard to think of one
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you can afford it, this is a no-brainer. At $350 this deck would be a value; at $200 it's almost criminal. Home Run Sony: among the BEST values available.
Sony is more than making a name for themselves with their new line of CD decks, and this is no exception. Just listing off the features and price should be enough to convince someone to purchase this deck, but adding a high quality build just keeps the good times rollin'.

INSTALLATION/CONFIGURE
Installation is largely conserved from deck to deck, so I'll let you decide on whether or not to install yourself (personally, Sony's instructions are descriptive enough -- you can do it :) ). As far as configuration goes, Sony's got all other manufacturers smacking their heads in jealousy. Push setup button, scroll Up/Down/Left/Right and change as you like -- pretty simple. Some options like Fade and Treble are even controlled with the rotary for quick adjustments, and others still are easier (Like EQ7 and DSO) because they have their own button. There isn't anything to complain about it this section.

FEATURES/WHAT CAN SHE DO?
It scrolls through 7 face colors at a button push (and dims when you turn on your lights at night), has a *7* BAND EQUALIZER (AMAZING for those of us who like the sonic "wiggle room," and if you don't, there are also many presets), has CD Changer/XM capability, comes with a card-remote, has High-Pass and Low-Pass Filters (to keep your speakers sounding good), has 23 RMS watts of power -- one of the highest on the market, 3 preamp outs for expansion, and 2 more features I'd like to elaborate on: DSO and MP3. This unit has 3 levels of DSO to make your music sound great with speakers low in the door -- sounds pretty normal, but once you hear you'll understand. This feature alone makes me a returning Sony customer, but adding 3 levels is a big plus. And lastly, MP3 playback on this unit is very quick, and very user friendly, not to mention it reads almost every format, including variable bit rate. This unit has so many features I'm hoping I didn't forget any -- there is very little that this deck can't do, and I mean VERY.

QUALITY/FUTURE
One specification of this unit thrusts Sony far above all competition: A 120db S/N ratio. This can be summed up as the "clarity" or "quality" of your music -- and is absolutely crucial for those of us that listen to vocal or orchestral music (if you ever crank the volume during that electric violin solo or super long high note, you'll hear the clarity difference here). Alpine has no S/N ratio near this good for near this price. The reader (laser) appears to be very sharp, as CD's with songs that would barely play previously are much improved, sometimes with no jitters. You can hear CD's get pulled in by "S-Drive," a mechanism that places CD's on a balanced internal track for added skip resistance (and it appears to help, very little to no skipping on dirt roads). The buttons and build quality all feel solid, and the removable fold-down faceplate should keep your unit lasting long and dust-free.

OVERALL
I hate to base so much of an appreciation on features and price, but when those two are as strong as you see here it can't be ignored. DSO and EQ7 give you lots of room to play with and make it easy to customize to the acoustics of your car. If CD's and MP3s aren't for you, This deck supports XM (I don't use it however) and has one of the most sensitive FM tuners available today (second only to other tuners Sony sells). This deck does so much, so flawlessly, and so inexpensively, that I'm having trouble finding something to give it negative comments on. This deck is the ideal for any replacement or professional use alike, and is the best value I've seen for anywhere near $200.
