The Bottom Line:
If you are looking for a CD deck to play mostly CD and care about sound, then this deck is for you.
Great for a CD player, bad for a radio.
I have a Honda 2000 crv, with stock speakers, deck was installed at Best Buy. I was looking at a couple of cd decks, JVC, Pioneer, Kenwood, and Sony. I had my eyes on Kenwood MVP5025 and Sony cd-f5700. Both player are rather comparable as far as features go. Both have comparable rating 22x4 (Kenwood) VS 23.2x4 (Sony), MP3, CD text, optional cd changer. I went with the Sony mostly because of the range of options I can use for sound, where as the kenwood didn't have nearly as much and there wasn't a "loud" setting. That was the deal breaker.
Sound (CD):
Fabulous for cd player, radio ok mostly because of its tuner and not the sound processor. It has dso, bbe, 6 preset eq, 1 custom eq, bass/treble setting, high/low pass, sub setting, and loud. Some of course are just nice to have features and not needed. The only ones I really use are loud, "xplod" preset, dso, bbe. So I should have went with f5500 (cheaper) instead of this one. With this range of settings for sound, you can no doubt find a combination of settings to fit your taste. As for me, I listen to everything (depends on my mood). When listening to Sarah Mclachlan (CD) or Dido (CD), not only is the vocal clear and warm, but also I can hear different instruments playing instead of them meshing into one. The bass is sometime too much for easy listening. But when listening to hip hop, r&b, there is plenty of bass and high. When listening to mp3, BBE can be enabled to make highs more clear. There are 3 levels of DSO to put even more emphasis on highs. I found out I can't use xplod and loud together because my stock speakers can't handle the bass.
Sound (Radio)
Because the radio tuner isn't the best, as a matter of fact it is worse than my stock tuner, the sound can't be as clear as it could be. As metioned before, DSO can be used to put emphasis on highs. 6 preset eq to boost highs and/or lows. "Loud" to have more treble and bass boost. And then of couse the regular, bass/treble, sub, high/low level fiter to play with. Because of my experience, I can't really say that the sound is amazing all the time. When the reception is clear, the sound can be clear and good. I lost 1 station totally and have semi clear stations for some. My stock radio turner was way better than this one, since I never had any problem with it. There are a couple of settings provided to help resolve bad receptions but didn't help in my case. "IF Auto" or "Wide", Local Only, Mono. According to the manual, "IF Auto" can be set to wide to help resolve bad reception. Again it didn't help me. This might or might not be a local problem. So I would suggest asking around if this is a concern. I know for sure Pioneer and JVC have better tuner.
Nice to have features:
It has Aux Iutput (in the back, not useful), cd text, color theme :), nice remote. I personally didn't care about the Aux Input. The Aux input is a RCA L R input, so you need a y converter to use it with an mp3 player. But it is probably made for car video player. CD text was one of the function I thought I had to have. Now that I have it, it is not very useful. I put mp3s into CDs, and so I know most of the songs. Plus when I am driving I shouldn't be reading the CD Text scrolling (it only scrolls once). So I can do with out it. The color is another nice to have feature. I can change the color from Red to purple or to other colors. Again, it shouldn't matter because your ares are on the road. The remote is thin and small, but if you have to move your hand and grab the remote why not just move your hand to the deck and press the button directly?
There a couple of minor setbacks.
Loud setting can only be accessed through the menu. Sound settings for CD and Radio are not independent. Radio turner very weak. Aux input in back.
Overall, I am satisfied with the deck dispite of my reception problem. I don't think I can find another deck with simlar range of sound settings in this price range. Next review (might be in weeks), infinity speakers for the deck :)
