The Bottom Line:
Lots of adjustsments but also easy to use if you dont want to adjust anything. Get it.
Got this to replace a defective Pioneer 6700. Sound qaulity is great, as should be expected of any unit in this price range. This Sony boasts a number of sound adjustments, starting with the 7 band EQ with 7 presets. You also get bass and treble, loudness, DSO, and BBE for discs. If you can't find some combination that sounds good, you're just not trying hard enough.
The multi-color changable display apparently did not catch on. I noticed this on Sony's 2 years ago when I got my JVC, no other brands have it now, and it does looks a little cheap and cheesy next to the cool-blue animated screens of most other stereos in this price range. But most cars do not have blue lighting inside, so you can find something on this stereo to match your car. And it's fun to change the colors. Although it would have been really cool to assign a different color to each source, or to have a setting to rotate them, as on the demo mode.
But...you can turn off the beep when you push a button, you cant do that on the Pioneer we returned. Almost everything you access regulary can be changed from the front panel. One exception is loudness which can only be changed in the setup menu. However the controls are all grouped around the volume knob, so you dont have to keep reaching across the face to get at the direction buttons to change things. Its a better arrangement than the Pioneer's or Kenwood's I tried.
The FM reception seems to be decent, about as good as my JVC although I havent listened to it as much as the CD. I think the buttons on the unit have a good solid feel.
I like this unit so much that when it goes on sale again Im going to get one to replace my JVC, since I need the EQ in my Camry with stock speakers. I was skeptical of Sony, the look of the display didnt give me confidence, but my wife really liked it. Once I installed and tried it, the performance and feel were quite impressive.
Update 4-7-05: I got the same unit for my Camry a few weeks ago. We actually got the 5710, the 5700 is the older model, but its almost exactly the same. The small buttons are blue on this model, someone else said they were red. This unit made a huge difference in the sound quality in my car, the EQ allowed me to tailor the sound of the stock speakers and get powerful, full sound out of them. I dont even need the loudness at all. I like the changable colors, I usually use a darker color at night, the dark blue matches the small buttons. The best stereo I have ever had.
Update 2-1-09: Still working great after 4 years and 90,000 miles of daily use.
