The Bottom Line:
Before you purchase, kill the power to the unit, as if you turned off your ignition. Listen to the BEEP. If you don't think you'll mind it, buy the unit.
I bought this in-dash unit for my Ford Escape, from Best Buy. At just under $200, the price was decent. I liked the multi-color display, and the sound was good. I used the auxiliary input for Sirius, my iPod, and a DVD player and found the input to be clean, providing no extraneous noise.
All was great with this in-dash unit, until the first time I turned off my car.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP.
The head unit gives a loud security warning BEEP BEEP everytime you turn off your vehicle. It's supposed to let you know you are leaving the faceplate attached, and it's warning you to remove it. At Best Buy, I never thought to turn the power off to test for a feature such as this.
I thought I could turn it off via the menu, but it's not possible. I contacted Sony, they told me that if I was so disatisfied, I should return the unit to Best Buy. I ended up wiring the unit so that it was always on. That is, I could turn the unit on without having the ignition turned on. That also meant I had to turn the unit off at the end of every day. If not, the radio would have power all night. Two dead batteries later, I yanked the unit.
Honestly, I'm not a picky person. The BEEPING was that loud. Every passenger in my car did a triple take when I turned off my car, asking "what's wrong, why is your car beeping? Did you leave the lights on..." Awful.
Why don't electronic companies resist the temptation to be cute? Why must they overdo everything? Keep it simple and functional. I know they often market these items to kids, but they really aren't giving the kids credit for having taste enough to understand the difference between quality workmanship and design, and fluff.
So I wrote this head-unit off as a complete waste of money, ripped it out, and it now sits in my garage cabinet.
I replaced the unit with a cheap Dual from Wal-Mart. It was $100 cheaper and works much better.
