Not exactly what I hoped for
Pros
Great display, radio reception, nice front input option, Ipod interface capability is nice.
Cons
SPEED of IPOD interface!! No Genre option. Locks out ipod controls
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Avoid it if you're looking to use the Xplod ipod interface, there are better options out there. If you just want a radio, it could work
First thoughts I got my CDX-GT310 from best buy for christmas as a gift. I had really been looking for a way to control the ipod from the radio, ideally to have it display song/artist information on the radio face.
on first glance, it was the perfect solution! I had it installed at BB so I cannot comment on how that went.
As soon as I got it - I was thrilled. The remote control, the face all seemed perfect.
Radio reception was great, no problems there. their BTM (Best tuning memory) is neat way to program lots of stations quickly.
General specs : 52w x 4 channels, has a remote control, has an on face aux port(ie to hook up items like MP3 players without the Xplod ipod controller), EQ, nice graphic display. Detachable face. Plays CDR/RW disks as well as MP3 disks. Compatible with Sirius Satellite radio as well as an Ipod via the Ipod interface (XA-110IP) (read thoughts below!)
General thoughts and use
Audio was good - a few options that took a bit of figuring out about the EQ etc, but its pretty flexible and there is a custom option that is great.
Then I discovered the big flaw of this unit --- sadly it was the part I was the most excited about --- the ipod interface. the Xplod concept worked great in theory. It was wired into the glove box. I quickly hooked up my 4th gen 60gb Photo Ipod (color screen) to the connector. The system only gives you the options of Artist, Song or Playlist to scroll through. No Genre which has always been my favorite way to listen to music. I thought "no problem, I can just work it with playlists".. The biggest flaw is the lag time -- changing playlists takes what seems like an eternity. You hit the button the remote, then wait -- wait, wait..then it kicks in. it quickly displays in scroll or not what is playing on the radio face.. This at first didnt seem like a major problem, but it quickly became tedious. If you have a lot of music as I do - going from ABBA to the rolling stones might take all day!! Sadly, the virtues of the ipod click wheel go away as well - its locked out when connected to the Xplod interface. You're stuck. So I've listened to the first few artists (A-B), as well as the beginnings of my playlists, but then get frustrated.... The FM rebroadcaster with its bad sound quality is just so much easier.
This sadly killed the joy of this product for me. I switched it out for another unit (see review soon) and its a shame, as Sony is on to something good here, but it needs major refinement before it "works"
