Practical review
Pros
Easy and intuitive, good MP3 playback and directory navigation + track info display
Cons
Has minor user interface annoyances for my taste
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
So far a good value.
Hello,
The 310 fills my needs very well. It plays MP3s and has front-side AUX-IN. I can't hear a difference in the sound quality from my previous stock radio (Mazda Protege 2000). I would have gotten the 210, but for an extra 20$, I got the 310 with free installation.
PROBLEMS (all minor):
- Won't display the time of day when turned off. Instead, it displays a "Sony advertising" routine, over and over! I leave it AUX-IN mode all the time, which eventually shows the time of day (continuously).
- The time of day, when displayed, is located just a bit too close to the "special sound effect" icon thingy. This makes it hard to read.
- The main control dial does not protrude far enough for comfortably turning it when wearing winter gloves (!). Same for most buttons on the radio (!).
ANNOYANCES:
----------
- It will display all kinds of unnecessary and time consuming special effects when switching play modes. Grrr.
THE GOOD:
--------
- For having played around with a not-so-intuitive comparable Pioneer model, I've found the Sony controls to be well laid out and easy to use.
- When playing MP3s, it does a good job of displaying pretty much anything I want (CD title, directory name, track name, embedded track title). Navigating a hierarchy of directories is nice and simple.
- Basically, I think it's a good value for the money I spent.
