Its a sleeper
Pros
Incredible SQ
Cons
Paint wearing off buttons(don't hurt the runnin none), and poor on-board signal processing
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Can't beat the value. For the price of one refurbished Clarion DRZ-9255 you can buy 5 NiB CDX-F605X's.
I hate to do this as I'm in the process of collecting as many of these as I can, but this is one heck of a SQ H/U.
Sony in the past has had a reputation of building inferior, as in all bling no ring, automotive receivers. They somehow messed up and got this one right. Don't let anyone ever tell you 24 bit burr/brown DAC's don't make a difference. They do. I have this unit installed in the wheelhouse of the party boat I work on. I'm running a set of Soundstream 5 1/4" Exacts powered by an oldschool PPI 2025 am and wow, talk about detailed highs. Just make sure to keep all sound processing external, i.e. leave all EQ and Xover settings FLAT and OFF.
Best bang for the buck by far for those of us who like it to sound not just loud, but GOOD. I know. I run a Clarion DRZ-9255 in my SQ ride. There's not a whole lot of difference between the two other than better DSP features and about $700-1300 cash. In fact some claim the Sony's sound quality to actually surpass that of the $1500 Clarion. I'm not sold on that idea yet, but they're darn close.
