Alternative to RAM-based MP3 players!

Pros Long battery life. Ability to FF & REW. Solid feature set.
Cons FF & REW too slow for very long files. Not durable.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Good product with a solid feature set but somewhat fragile.
I was shopping for MP3 players. The RAM players seemed fairly expensive for the price. Buying a player that reads MP3's burned to CD-RW's made the most sense economically. For the cost of a rewritable disk I get up to 700 meg. And I can have plenty of disks on hand so this far exceeds the memory limits of a RAM based player.

This Sony has good sound. As I write this update, however, I have had a problem that I consider to be a design flaw. I did drop it a few feet onto a wooden floor. Now the volume up button no longer works. AND, before I realized this, I had through my many attempts to get it to work, turned the volume down all the way. Now it's stuck at zero volume.

Because the volume buttons are on the very outer rim of the unit, if it does take a spill, it is possible for either button to take the full force of the fall.

It might have been a fluke that the way it fell for me is one in a million. But the bottom line is don't expect it to work if it is going to get some abuse.

I use it daily, taking it on walks and listening around the house. With it's long battery life, it is an excellent choice for road trip audio.

The sound quality is on a par with other good portable CD players. The frequency range is good. The digital to analog converters (D to A) are of decent quality. It's not super hi-fi. It's very good for general listening.

When playing mp3's, the disc spins up occasionally to load data into a buffer. Then the disk stops (thus saving battery power). It's strange to be listening to sound while the disc is motionless (for a time). The unit itself does make some quiet motor & spinning up sounds that are barely more noticeable than on regular CD players.

As others have mentioned the battery life is incredible! I use those new NiMH rechargables (two AA's) and they last for weeks!!

The interface has some other features that allow you to have different display modes, playback modes, two bass-boost levels, you can enable AVLS (auto volume leveling system) and there is a scroll-wheel that allows you to scroll through files. There is a hold function.

There is a digital volume control with a pair of small "+ & -" tilt buttons on the side. Unlike most digital volume controls, this offers a very high resolution for wide selection of volumes (even at very low levels).

I listen to long audio books on this thing. It does remember where you last stopped it (unless you remove the disc). In pause mode it beeps annoyingly every second (although you can turn the beeping off).

The unit does allow you to FF and REW (which many CD/MP3 players won't allow you to do). But the FF/REW scan speed is fairly slow. Depending on the resolution of the mp3 it can take a minute to fast-forward 5 minutes. For long audio books, it's best if you use some utility to split long files into smaller separate files before you burn your MP3 CD-RW.

It also comes with software to create Atrac3plus CD's (a hi-fi compressed audio format) -- the software is for windows.

It has a built-in combo DC in/ battery charger, and a line out jack.

My unit has a multi-contact slot right next to the headphone jack. But there is no mention of it's use in the manual. I thought it might have been there for a headphone remote control that was later removed from the design.

I belt clip was not included (not that I'd trust one). Instead, I went out & bought a little padded carrying bag at a thrift store that makes me feel more secure about carrying it around.

Hope this review helps you make a decision.
