Way cool and just 6 months old

Pros An all around good player
Cons No car charger, should have more accessories
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I can definitely recommend this dvd player. High cool factor. Held it in my hand and I had to have it!

This Portable tablet style DVD Player made by Sony was released in to the US market just last April. It sports a 7 inch wide Screen and loads from it's under side. It does not have built in speakers, but comes with a Speaker cradle which also doubles as a charging stand.
It plays every kind of discs except: dvdram, dvdrom, cdrom and those dvd's not recorded in VR mode.
It is also not region free. Only those dvds encoded for region 1 can be played. Region 1 is the United states and Canada. I have no trouble playing every disc in my collection including the dvdr's I have made of old vintage TV programs from the 1950s. I am totally blind, so I don't see the picture, but my wife tells me that it's as clear as a bell. The sound is better than most portables because the speaker cradle packs a whopping 450 mW of power, sounding comparable to a 15 or 20 inch flat panel TV, or perhaps like our old GE television from the fifties. That makes it fun for me to listen to my old fifties programming.
The controls are located along the top of the player, and the play button is marked with a tactile dot. The thin and streamlined Remote has tactile dots at various positions and it's bubble buttons have a positive feel and make a loud click thus making it easy for a blind or visually impaired person to use.
I have played several discs with menus and submenus and found them to be easily accessible. The transport, how ever is somewhat slow and cumbersome and takes a long time to move. It takes a long 7 seconds for a disc to begin loading and reading, and as much as 3 seconds to switch layers on a duel layered disc.
There are 2 headphone jacks so that my wife and I both can watch a movie and listen to it together on the plane and a support kickstand so that we can put the player on the tray table in front of us. The kick stand, however, is positioned on the left side of the player making it somewhat unsteady. It would have been better to put it in the center of the disc compartment lid, kind of like a picture frame stand.
The a-v jacks are switchable, so you can play other devices out through it such as a VCR or Game consol.

There are some accessories that Sony should of provided to make this player an even better buy like A-V cables for hooking the player to a tv set, and a car mounting bracket or a mounting bag so you wouldn't have to hold the player while on a road trip.
It does come with a carrying pouch that protects it from damage but there is no way to expose the screen so you could watch a movie and mount it on a headrest of a car seat.
There is no dedicated power switch. You use the stop button to turn the power on and off. As a blind person, I can't see the led lamps on the player, so I have to listen for the almost inaudible click that the amplifier makes when it turns on and off.
These are miner inconveniences and do not detract from my enjoyment of this really cool player.
This player has a very high cool factor, and performs up to its expectations. It has been much maligned by other reviewers on line, and it is the opinion of this reviewer, that it doesn't deserve it.

I like it a lot.
