The Bottom Line:
This is a disposable theater system. OK with paying $350 every 2 years for great sound, then you'll love it. Got an IQ in the triple digits, look elsewhere!
I've finally given up on the Sony home theater-in-a-box systems. I had good experiences with an earlier Sony sound system and wanted to repeat those experiences. I also have a 65" Sony HDTV. In April 04, I purchased the DAV-FC7 from my local Best Buy.
Set-up was very easy because of the color coded labels. For about 3 weeks, everything was great. Wonderful sound and theater effect.
Before the first month was up, the unit froze. "Standby" blinked non-stop and the unit was non-responsive. It wouldn't turn off and I unplugged the unit. After waiting different intervals of time (5 min, an hour, even a day!), it would repeat the freeze.
I called Sony customer service. They acted liked they had never heard of this problem before. It was under warranty and the Sony technician said that I could ship it to them for repair... at my cost. And, it would take a couple of weeks for it to be returned to me. I asked if they had a local service center here in DC. She replied no and said it might be easier for me to return it to Best Buy. I asked about some type of compensation for the 5 DVDs that I had stuck in the unit that I couldn't get out. She gave me the professional equivalent of SOL.
Frustrated, I packed up the unit and speakers. This was no small feat because I had done a great job configuring the system so as to hide the wires under my baseboards and carpet. Also, I had already discarded the original packing.
I returned it to Best Buy for a replacement unit. Despite not having the original packing, Best Buy allowed me to get another unit that they had on the shelf and did not charge me a restocking fee. One of their techs also booted up the unit and somehow got my 5 DVDs out. [Kudos to Best Buy for the great customer service!]
Fast forward to November 05... everything was great... no problems and no repeats of the freeze issue. Until Thanksgiving when I had a house full of guests watching a DVD.
Same as 18 months earlier... the DAV-FC7 would freeze and "Standby" blinked incessantly. During playback, the image would freeze on the screen. I would go through the motions of turning off the unit for an hour or even a few days and the same problem: "Standby" hell!
Each time that I would turn it off, it would start up like everything was fine. Then, after playing without any problems for 5-7 minutes, it would lock up again. This time, not even the remote could turn off the unit.
Learning my lesson from April 04, I got it powered back up and removed all my DVDs. This is the last time that Sony will get any money from me!
