Disappointed I don't own a Sony "HandyCam"

bytawb Mar 6, 2007
Pros Don't need a PC.
Cons Only works as advertised with top of the line Sony camcorders.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Wait. Don't buy yet until they have worked out the bugs or made it so it will operate with non-sony products. Others are entering the market.
Because if I did, I could hook it up to the USB Jack and it might work. As it is, it won't recognize my USB connection from my JVC-HDD camcorder when I plug it into the USB (handycam) slot. But it will accept the A/V input, from my JVC to the yellow/white/red input. It accepted my S-Video connection with red/white audio once. Just once. Then it refused to recognize ever again.

Picture quality from my HDD camcorder is not so hot. My mini-DV camcorder takes better quality video. And as soon as I buy that $31 DV-cable I should see an improvement in quality. So they say.

The main reason for buying the DVDirect was to archieve my Hi-8 collection. Had to buy a Sony TRV-i38 for that. Will start that project today. It has no S-video output. Just an A/V jack that turns into a yellow and white plug.

This machine was supposed to be my dream machine. The machine that finally freed me from the hassle of fighting with competing video, photo programs on my PC. Damn that windows OS. I promised myself when I got that second PC it would never see an internet connection. Microsoft finally broke me. I connected to the internet for 2 hours late last year and downloaded every fix and patch I could. Only to buy the DVDirect early this year, 2007. Now I'm PC free. Except for mpeg music from my extensive collection of the "music of my life" CDs.

The DVDirect touted burning a 60 min. video in 10-minutes. Forget that, unless you have a sony HDD camcorder with firewire. Or as sony likes to call it "i-wire".

My ratings on product will reflect 4 days of use.
