Good solid product from Sony
Pros
Bypass the computer for DVD burning. Easy to use.
Cons
Any date/screen information is lost during the conversion. No good at creating menus/thumbnails.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Good solid product from Sony that is good for converting home vides from tape to DVD.
I bought the Sony DVDirect MC3 in March 2008 and so far have had no problems what so ever. The burner works as promised and as per spec. I have not had a single faulty DVD yet - converted 60 tapes so far and have got predictable good quality DVDs. No need for the computer or any messy DVD editing software. I have used both DVD-r & DVD+R formats and have had no issues.
There are only two sticky points with the MC3:
1. You lose all date/on-screen information stored on the tape during conversion.
2. The chapter/menu creation is not very good. It creates only one menu/thumbnail at the beginning of the tape and does not create any more thumbnails for the remaining 2 hour duration. The only way I was able to force a thumbnail creation was to stop both the tape playing and the DVD burn process in the middle & re-start again. Chapter creation is painless and can be programmed for a new chapter every 5, 10, 15....minutes.
The reason I purchased the MC3 rather than the MC5 was because I needed the capability to use it as an external CD/DVD drive with my desktop. The DVDirect works fine in this mode also when connected via a USB cable.
I have not tried the video editing software that came with the box and cannot comment on it. I have not tried burning DVDs via the computer and can not comment on this either.
