The Bottom Line:
This is an outstanding boombox, and it has great sound quality.
I got so tired of lugging around my old bulky boombox, that I decided it was time for an upgrade. If you like going camping, spending time at the beach, or just being outdoors this is a great boombox. In fact, it was meant for people who prefer an active lifestyle. Sony has been producing excellent products for years, and this one is another fine example of quality and fine performance. Its size and low weight make it a breeze to transport from the SUV to anywhere you go. Its price of $119.00 is hard to beat, and it can be found at most major electronics retailers.
The sound is fantastic, and the dual bass really cranks out of its 4" speakers. It is hard to believe that it only produces 2.3 watts per channel, as the sound can really shake the area you play music in. The sound is crystal clear as well, and it plays at a level comparable to a Tivoli or Boston Acoustics radio. There are 30 total presets for the radio dial, which is digital tuned.(20 FM/10 AM) It is simple to put your favorite stations on the presets, and the buttons are large enough to make changing easy as well.
This boombox plays CD's, CD RW's, and MP3's. I have never had a problem with any format, and it cranks out the sound almost immediately. The best feature is the program and shuffle buttons, which work great if you want some variety from your single CD playing unit. Just make sure its in one place, as the shock resistance feature does not work as well as some other units. However, it still performs adequately in this regard. It is water resistant, as I accidentally proved this with it being left out in a small rainstorm. Luckily it still plays flawlessly, but I won't be trying that again.
My only real complaint is the battery life. If its possible to plug it in, by all means do so.(A/C adaptor included) The 6 C batteries can run out in a afternoon, which can make for an expensive proposition when spending time outdoors for a weekend. Of course, the batteries probably last a lot longer without the volume being loud and in constant use! I like my Sony boombox a lot, and even though it has a bizarre modern shape, it works well with great sound quality. Its a great buy, and I recommend it for anyone looking for some music outdoors.
