The Bottom Line:
Light weight, excellent auto-focus feature for quick spotting both near and far, bright image, ruggedness, all-around German-built quality make this an excellent value.
The Steiner Safari 9x40 looks like it should be heavier than it is, which is the first pleasant surprise. The next pleasant surprise is the sharpness of the Sports Auto-focus system which requires no focusing for images from 20 yards to infinity. I didn't believe this claim when I first read it, but it is true. I compared the image sharpness and depth-of-field against a top-of-the-line Minolta Actius 10x50, which uses a traditional center focus wheel. The images both near and far were excellent, if not slightly better with the Steiner -- except unlike with the Minolta, I never had to focus!
The image does not suffer in the least with this feature, and the convenience is incredible, especially for fast-action viewing like hunting (waste time to focus on movement in the brush, and that buck is gone from sight!), or boating, or sports action (near-side field to far-side field), or animal watching.
Long eye-relief of 20mm is especially good for me since I wear glasses. The included lens caps ("rain covers") are very nice. The overall quality, fit, and finish of this German-built product are impressive, as is the packaging. Disappointing is the fact that it comes with no carry case (probably not needed since it is already rubber-armored), and that the neck-strap looks cheap and dinky. A binocular of this kind of quality deserves a neck strap befitting this product. Other than that one "nit" I would highly recommend this item.
