Sylvania DVR90VE DVD Recorder / VCR Combo

This is one case where shopping by price is woefully wrong. This product is sold as a DVD recorder and VCR player, with the capacity to record onto a DVD from a VCR. We paid $299. at a local big box component shop, in late 2004. The manual is difficult to use, not clear on the recording operation, onto VHS or DVD, or from VHS onto DVD. DVDs played OK, with picture quality and sound quality acceptable. The VCR component began to eat tape around the 5th use. This appetite persists. As such we could not create DVDs from our extensive library of VHS tapes, which was the purpose of buying the product. The warranty is 6 months with no in-store support. The Sylvania name is licensed to various manufacturers, and this manufacturer is two tiers down, in China with email, and phone support routed to China. We recommend this product NOT be purchased, for any of the four reasons one might do so: price, DVD player, VHS player, DVD recorder.
