The Bottom Line:
As I said, I'd buy another at current prices if I knew where I'd put it. Hmmm, that wall by the bathtub looks plain... ;)
Bought this set from BJ's Wholesale club in May of 2006. I paid $550 after $50 instant rebate. These sets are available for under $400 now at places like Newegg. I've used the set exclusively in my master bedroom mounted to a swing/tilt arm on the wall. Setup is simple, Display quality without a cable box is decent, but nothing to brag about. When used with a PC (VGA cable, no DVI on my tv) or DVD player(Component cables, mine doesn' have HDMI) the quality is nice. I've seen better, but for the price, it's great.
The set has quite a few inputs for a budget model. The primary complaint I have is the stock speakers are absolutely horrible and almost unbearable. I've adjusted the bass/treble in efforts to take the buzz out of it, but little help. If you get this set, make sure you have an outside source to run your sound through.
I've hooked up my XPS laptop and watched movies and they looked great, I've hooked up other PC's and used the TV as a monitor and it was great, even gaming didn't look so bad. I wouldn't use this as my desktop monitor since the gaming didn't look THAT good compared to my Dell 2407FPW monitor, but it was nice to have the option when I needed a simple connection to a monitor and didn't want to crawl under my desks.
The response time when changing channels is a little slow, but tolerable. The remote is functional (even after a year) but takes a little getting used to. Basic functions are simple in a dark room after owning it a little while, but changing the source or other buttons will require a light source so you can see what you're doing. Remote feels brittle and I'm glad I haven't dropped it yet or had it fall from the nightstand.
I'd buy another one of these sets in a heartbeat for under $400 if I had a place to put one. If my set lasts me till the end of this year, I'll feel I got my money's worth out of it compared to the price of other models @ 27" when I bought this one. I have no doubt this set will last for quite awhile. If not, I'll throw it in the gutter and go get anutter ;)
********Update************
My unit DOES have a DVI input. Guess it's been so long since I looked at the connection panel on the back... I have it mounted up over a doorway so I looked under it a couple days ago and went "hmmm... there IS a DVI, time to correct myself".
When I run the unit with the VGA input, I use 1280x800 since that's the native res on my dell xps m140 laptop (14.1"). I've used it with other desktop pc's but only as a quick connect monitor to make sure the pc was working, never adjusted the res on the desktops to see what the LCD could do.
speakers still s*ck tho ;) lol.
