***NOTE: This unit is manufactured by Danger and is called Hiptop by them but remarketed by T-mobile as Sidekick--makes for some confusion when surfing for compatible equipment and sites***

T-Mobile Sidekick (Danger): Too good to be true?

bydaviddennis Oct 18, 2002

Pros Web browsing easy and effective; only decent wireless Internet plan in the industry
Cons T-Mobile coverage spotty; use a little awkward as a cellphone
Recommended it? Yes

What is the T-Mobile Sidekick?

The Sidekick is a cell phone combined with web browser, email, AOL Instant messaging and phone text messages, all in one convenient wrapper. The included keyboard promises easy typing, as opposed to fiddly handwriting, and the $39.95 all you can eat Internet... Read full review »

Pros Full keyboard, AIM, email, color screen
Cons Bulky, phone isn't easy to use while driving
Recommended it? Yes

I purchased the Sidekick II from T-Mobile about 3 weeks ago. I had an old Siemens phone, which had basically no features and was starting to fall apart. I specifically switched to T-Mobile so that I could use the Sidekick, as they are the only provider supporting it. The Sidekick is full of... Read full review »

Pros Sleek
Cons Expensive

...and it's already been replaced by the Sidekick II! Now that's just nuts! In November of 2003, I purchased a T-Mobile Color Sidekick through Amazon.com for my son. I used it for a few months before I gave it to him for Christmas. Since then he's logged many hours on it--so many that the letters... Read full review »

I've never used a PDA before. I had a hand-me-down Handspring PDA for a while but never got used to using a stylus to "write" with, and having to stare at a little computer screen to organize my life was maddening. So I decided that perhaps I wasn't a PDA kind of person, and just continued to put... Read full review »

Me and My Sidekick

Pros Small, easy
Cons doesn't work well with overlays
Recommended it? Yes

Every so often, I think to myself that I need a cell phone. When my grandmother won a sidekick in a contest, she gave it to me figuring I'd have more patience that she would for it, mostly because so much comes with it. Aside from a cell phone, you get a Web browser, an e-mail account, AOL Instant... Read full review »

Pros well designed, works great and is useful
Cons the camera is not the best
Recommended it? Yes

I was reluctant to get the Sidekick because I notice mainly kids and hollywood twenty somethings carrying them around, but on a whim one day at the mall I bought one.

Everyone in this business has a blackberry. I could easily have one, my company hands them out like cookies to anyone who... Read full review »

--Updates (Jan 10, 2005)--
1. I seriously take this thing everywhere I go. Indispensable.
2. Hardware still working perfectly with no reason to send in for replacements. The screen, however, is beginning to be scratched, despite it being in my pocket with nothing else in it. Heard of a... Read full review »

Update: 7/7/2005 I sold my Sidekick II a month ago and have now replaced it with a Treo 600. I stand by the review that the Sidekick II device is a great device and a hell of a convergence device. But, the company Danger has no clue to what uptime is for backend servers. During my five months using... Read full review »

Sidekick (Hiptop): Lack of Outlook Syncing is its downfall

byalexisrn Nov 2, 2002

Pros Price of hardware and service; User Friendly design; Unlimited Data Usage; FAST Internet...
Cons No Outlook Syncing; Unlimited data guaranteed for only one year
Recommended it? No

I am writing this review for people who are already familiar with the T-Mobile Sidekick (or Danger Hiptop), and are more interested in how well the device works, as opposed to what it does.

The T-Mobile Sidekick has failed to deliver on any of its promises; most importantly, Outlook... Read full review »
