Great picture/terrible sound(without headphones)

Pros Great picture/features
Cons Internal speakers are way too low to be useable
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  see above
This is the first portable dvd player i've purchased. But i've seen and used many others at work. I purchased it at Best Buy for $200. The day i went to buy it, the floor model was not working so I was unable to test the sound before hand. The price was right and I saw many online, but I really liked this one, so i bought it. I figured if all these no-name brand ones sound and look great this one would be better(after all, it's a Toshiba). Well every thing this player does it does well (except for the built in speakers). The picture quality is great. Has all the functions of a full size dvd wihe a remote. Battery life is good (about 3 hours). Unit is fairly light weight and compact. Components feel durable(only time will tell). But the built in speakers that are in the unit are junk. They are so low you need to be in a room withe absolutely no noise to hear it (and even then you better be real close, like holding it). You have to turn the volume knob half way before you can even begin to hear any sound come from the speakers. At full volume this thing better be on your lap to hear it. And the sound that it does make is dreadful. Very tinny and echo-like. Now if you put headphones on it's a whole other story. Now you get the full range Dolby Digital sound. Problem for me is I don't want to use headphones or external after-market speakers so I can use it. Not only do those things not fit in the travel case I purchased, but I shouldn't have to. Toshiba really "dropped the ball" on this one. Bottom line: If you plan on using headphones this unit is good, but I'd like to have the option. Plus, I use it at work. And when my buddy(s) comes over to see what I'm watching, its kinda ailenating to say, "sorry you don't have headphones".
