The Bottom Line:
recommended. Hard to do better at the price
I've seen the TX-SR302 selling for as little as $80 refurbished and I picked one up two months ago.
I was initially a little leery of buying refurbished gear but it came with the same store return policy as new gear and a one year Onkyo warranty so I took a chance. So far it has performed flawlessly driving a 5.1 system in a room measuring about 18 by 12 feet.
What do you get for 80 bucks? The amps have a given spec of 65 watts in all five channels from 20 to 20,000 Hz at .007 THD. As I do not have the instruments to measure this, I can only say that this little receiver can drive my speakers to a level that is as clean and as loud as I or my neighbors can stand.
For DVD's there is both a digital coaxial and optical input to get true 5.1 surround. The 302 has Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital and DTS for movies and DSP modes which I seldom use. I also like its stereo direct mode bypassing all tone controls and sound processing.
It has selectable subwoofer crossovers at 60, 80, 120 and 180 Hz.
The FM performance is better than what it replaced, an Onkyo that I had for about 12 years.
About the only feature I wish it has is a phono preamp. I have lots of old albums.
But for terrific performance in a smaller room and useful real world features at an exceptional price it will be hard to do better than the 302.
