Nice unit for bedroom, kitchen, dormroom, etc.

Pros Nice sounding, good quality, psuedo-competitor to Bose for a lot less $$
Cons Don't try to manually open the CD door, it may jam...
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you want to split the difference between lower cost, and higher quality, this is a very nice compromise.
I found refurbished units at Fry's Electronics on sale for $40. I knew nothing of the unit, except for the longstanding quality of the TEAC name, combined with the very low price of $40. I didn't even get to hear it play at the store. The unit has a lot of functionality, features that I haven't even used yet after two months.

The unit sounds very good, whether CD or radio. It does not have a "tinny" sound, whether the volume is high or low. The CD door is motorized and opens from top to bottom in the front middle portion of the unit. I suspect that perhaps some units became refurbished models from people trying to manually pull the CD door open after they bought it. At first glance, there is a tendency to want to pull the CD door open manually. I tried that at the store, and the door seemed to get jammed. Use the motorized feature, which engages by pushing the button down on the top right of the unit.

The unit comes with a flexible wire antenna for radio reception, which attaches to the back of the unit through a push-in socket, much like an antenna on a stereo receiver. The unit can be mounted to a wall using screws, which slide into the 2 screw slots molded into the back of the unit.

The unit's display is very viewable, even at an angle, such as viewing the unit on a nightstand from a bed. The sleep timer can be set for power off in 10 minutes, to as long as 90 minutes, in 10 minute increments. However, once set, you cannot see how many minutes remain until power off. The unit also comes with a palm-sized remote control, which takes 2 "AAA" batteries.

So far, I have been happy with my purchase. I think this unit now has successor units that have replaced this model, but they are probably conceptually similar in design.

Long term update, as of March, 2007. Unit is still very nice, works perfectly, sounds good...
