SL-DP9 replaced this model

Pros excellent price/performance ratio
Cons no phone jack
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  How much do you really need to spend to get good performance? This is a good looking and great performing unit for the money, with all the usual features.
The latest model is the SL-DP9, which seems to have replaced the actual listed model #.
I got mine recently at Best Buy, for just $99. I was replacing a Marantz unit, which stopped spinning CDs for some reason. They seem to cost more to fix than buy now days. I am a critical listener, and have other CD players. This particular one is hooked up to a 5 speaker surround system, and is in a room with very good acoustics. I say all this to let you know that my opinion is based on using it in a demanding setting.
I have never spent so little on an audio component, and was hesitant to do so this time. What I realized as I started looking for a player is that prices have fallen dramatically on CD turntables. DVDs have taken over of course, and they also play CDs. Far fewer CD players are being sold.
The result, happily for me, is that I can get more for less now.
I know Technics is made by Panasonic, and costs less than Panasonic, but still gives good performance and is reliable and well designed. I am impressed with the features this unit (SL-DP9) has. It has the same MASH 1- bit technology used in Panasonic players

The remote even has a power button. Very rare on CD changers. It allows me to choose to turn on the player when I start the amp, instead of either having to manually do so, or plug it in to a switched outlet on the amp. What's the point of having a remote for the amp if you still have to physically go over to the CD player and push it on?

This is a feature rich unit, with everything other players costing at least $40 more offer. It has a bright display, multiple random/continuous play modes, and can be opened to exchange discs when one is playing. It's quiet and quick, and does everything a high quality unit should do.
The only thing I feel is 'missing' is a headphone jack and level control. Where I am using this unit I won't need that feature. As long as I can program tracks to avoid the ones I don't want to hear I'm happy. Surprisingly it does have a digital optical output for direct digital recording

My recommendation? If you are trying to save some money, and not hung up on having to have 'name' gear like Harmon Kardon or Marantz, this unit will serve you well. It has a 1 year parts/labor warranty, all the usual features, and a great price. Do you really need more?
