The Bottom Line:
Technology in this unit is way outdated now. Look for newer models. If you find one really cheap and need a CD changer go for it.
I purchased this CD player about 2 years ago. I have had no problems since that time. It has a digital output and DTS capability depending if the CD is encoded with it or not (I haven't found any discs encoded). My suggestion now is to get a DVD player with MP3 technology. You can fit 150 to 200 songs on one MP3 disc. Equal to about 12 or 14 CD's.APEX seems to have the best deal going. (only a viable option if you have or plan to have a CD burner) And there is no delay between discs like with a changer beacause all of the songs are on 1 disc. Or you can get a newer DVD changer that can pull double duty. If you insist on having a regular CD changer this is a good one. It does find and track the next disc fairly quickley, but really no more so than any other decent brand/model I have tried. I have played CD's I have made myself on CD-R media they track and play just as easily as production CD's. It will not work with CD-RW media. The sound is great, the build feels flimsy but it has stood the test of time well. I have always been happy with Technics products, and this one holds true. Spiral mode is a waste of electronics. ID scan is quite smart, it scans into the song for a point with more sound. Instead of just playing the first 10 seconds. I really don't like the remote(which is ok,I use my Technics universal receiver remote) The buttons are too small and hard to learn to use without looking.
