Best AM antenna under $50

bydougk5 Apr 14, 2003
Pros It works!
Cons Large size. It is almost 10" tall.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I haven't found a better AM antenna for under $50.
This antenna is a 9.5" grey plastic ring on a 2X7" rectangular base. There is one control, a tuning knob. There is an optional wire included to hook the antenna to your receiver. The AM-1000 lists for $50, but a smart shopper can find it for much less.

By using the antenna's tuning knob and rotating the antenna, you should be able to block out interfering stations and eliminate the squeal that is so common on the crowded AM band. This antenna made the AM section of my tuner (Cambridge Audio) usable again. Granted there isn't much to listen to on AM, but now I can listen to baseball games on the stereo rather than having to resort to a small AM portable radio.

For AM performance, this antenna is much better than the Terk antennas that support both AM & FM, including their top of the line AF-1.

The only downside that I can think of is the rather large (9.5" diameter) size. Terk claims that this antenna can be used in close proximity to the radio without being physically connected, but in my experience it is much more effective when connected, provided your tuner allows for a direct hook-up.
