Love my Tivo!!!
Pros
So Many! Catches shows you wouldn't think of.
Cons
Can be difficult to program.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
We Absolutely love our Tivo! 80 hours is OK - recommend higher recording time.
My husband and I avoided Tivo like the plague - we didn't want to be tied to the TV. Hello! That is exactly what Tivo did - it freed us up! What a wonderful product, what a wonderful idea, I wish I'd thought of it!
We have two 80 hour Tivo's that we bought life time service plans for. We assumed they'd pay themselves off within a few years anyway. Tivo has done away with the life time plans and the 3 year plan is now the same price as the life time plan, so I am very happy that we did do that - Tivo should come back with the plan.
I left the set up to my husband, he loves that kind of stuff anyway. It seemed very detailed and confusing to me. He's tied them into our computer and has the shows transferable from the living room to the bedroom and vice versa. He is a computer programmer, which probably helps - some of what you have to do can be overwhelming. The actual setting up of shows is very easy - and fun to do. You can set up a wish list, say you like Sandra Bullock, but you can't remember the name of a movie she was in - you go through picking her name (it will come up by spelling her last name in the wish list area) and then view all shows that you wish to see that is available to you. It can find anything within a two week time period (two weeks out).
The setting up of your weekly shows is very easy as well - you can set it up for new shows only, new and repeat, or record all of the showings. You can change it to add a moment or two to the beginning and the end of your recording, or hours if need be - the Oscars anyone! :)
The Tivo also learns your preferences, so it will record a show it thinks you may like. If you don't like this feature, you can go through picking a program, then to Tivo Suggestions - you then erase Tivo's Suggestions. There also a way to completely turn it off, but again, you'll have to fiddle to find that feature. I like, most of the time, what Tivo finds, so I've never turned it off - though I have erased items in the past.
Tivo is so much better than the DVR available through the Cable and Dish companies - theirs seemed to burn out quickly as we'd gone through 3 (2 through Dish 1 through Cable), then we decided to purchase the Tivo. No regrets!
