WUNNERFUL!!
Pros
Besides the obvious pros.. Being able to search for the show by name, time, etc.
Cons
Not being able to watch a different live show, while recording.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The freedom it allows us as individuals and as a family is just priceless. Customer service rocks and that counts for so much to me.
I LOVE my TiVo so much, that I bought a second one for my bedroom. I can't believe I'm reading reviews that complain. I mean, all the DVR's out there, have some pros and cons, but the TiVo has been WONDERFUL! Customer service has been as well!
My husband finally gave in and let me get a TiVo. We actually spend LESS time in front of the TV now than we did before! The thing is, that it enables us to watch the things we really want to watch, and not just waste time watching things that just happen to be on when we have spare time. Also it takes away the urgency of having to be home and in front of the tv by a certain time. Now we are able to know that it will be there when we're ready.
I think having the TiVo in the bedroom was a big factor in the one in the main room being as successful. We have an 80 hour in the main room, and a 40 hour in the bedroom. There are some shows that my husband and I watch, that the kids could care less about, so we record them on the bedroom one. Maybe if we didn't have that one, there would be more arguing over who get's to record what, when.
I have the TiVo's set to download programming information in the middle of the night, so we never have to worry about the speed of that particular feature.
I have to speak, a moment, about the customer service. They have been AWESOME! They helped us to install the TiVo over the phone, incorporating all of our other electronics. Not only that, but when we changed cable companies (ours was bought by Comcast) the cable guys were TOTALLY clueless on how to hook up the TiVo. I couldn't believe it. They set everything up and when they left, it only worked on the regular input, but not with TiVo. So I called TiVo up, and right over the phone, they again helped me hook it all up right, fixing all the mistakes that the in person cable guys did.
As far as the monthly cost. We pay $12.95 a month for the first one, and $6.95 a month for the second one. We opted for the monthy option vs the $299.00 lifetime option. The reason for that is because the lifetime membership goes with the actual TiVo, not the people. So if we sold it (fat chance!) or had to return it in the event that something went wrong with it, we would lose out on the membership and have to pay all over again. Even if it's a TiVo warrenty covered issue. That was kind of a bummer, but I felt it was better to be safe than sorry on that.
The TiVo has SO many wonderful options, but the one big lacking option that they have is that while recording a show, you can't watch live TV other than whats being recorded. In other words, you can't change the channel. HUGE bummer, but it's something that is VERY easily livable. There are SO many things pre-recorded on the TiVo that there is always something else to watch. Still, it would be a nice option.
The TiVo has two weeks worth of TV programming, but if we could get it further out, that would be nice. But really I'm just nitpicking. That's such a minor complaint.
I just truly love the TiVo, and our experience has been nothing but wonderful. Keep in mind that it's important not to expect perfection. It's a computer, and things can go wrong. Nothing major has ever happened to our two TiVos, and I feel confident that if it did, the customer service people would take care of us.
Oh, I might mention that we have not used the networking part of the TiVo. I know people that have, but it's not in my realm of 'how to put together' knowledge. LOL
I highly recommend the TiVo.
