The Bottom Line:
The others can only try to match TiVo's ease of use.
I knew I might want to check into this Tivo thing when I found out my mother-in-law was a Tivo junkie - and she doesn't have a techno-bone in her body!
Seriously, this is not a just for a man type of technology. It works so easily, my 3-year-old almost has the hang of it. If you are thinking about a Tivo, just buy one - you'll love it.
Here are just a few of the reasons I love my Tivo:
1. The biggest advantage to Tivo is that you watch your shows when you want to. Period. Programming is as easy as finding the show on the menu and recording it (or all shows in a season pass). Then, you can watch the show on your schedule - even set it not to delete so you know you won't miss it.
2. I can set season pass options for my child's favorite shows so they have them on tap any time they'd like to view them. I can set them to have anywhere from 1 to 10 . . . or all of the episodes. For instance, if a new show comes on to record and I have a 5 show limit, the oldest show gets axed and the new one is saved. I find it keeps the shows fresh and gives my children options to watch at the same time.
3. Tivo-to-go - if you have a home network, you can use Tiv0-to-go to transfer shows to your desktop, or better yet, your laptop for a road trip. If you have a DVD burner, you can burn shows to disk to archive or take with you.
4. Home Networking - I can view photos from my desktop computer upstairs on my TV downstairs (slideshows too!). Also, I can stream MP3 files (individually, shuffled, or from a playlist) all through my wireless network (802.11b). Works flawlessly.
5. Scheduling - the tivo service knows if shows will be on later than normal. You don't even have to think about rearranging them, the scheduler fixes everything.
I hope this helps your decision. Tivo has it figured out. There are others out there, but I can't say enough about these guys.
