The Bottom Line:
This is probably the best consumer GPS right now simply because it has great software.
While most GPS devices have the same underpinning hardware technology, whether a GPS navigation system works or not really depends on the navigation software -- and Tomtom's GO in-car system is perhaps the best because its software is accurate, easy to use, and full of features.
Let's see. It can do 3D mapping, so you get a dashboard view of where you are going. It has voice instructions, which prompt you to make a turn *before* a turn is coming up. (Believe it or not, some GPS systems tell you about a turn after you've already missed it!) It has a color touch screen, and all commands are entered via tapping.
What sets Tomtom's software apart from competition is its flexibility. It can recalculates the route automatically if you go offtrack. For example, say you somehow missed a turn despite the ahead warning from Tomtom. Tomtom will then automatically figure out what you should do to get back on the correct route. If you make a U turn on I-95, no problem, Tomtom will tell you where to get off and turn in order to get back on your route. Of course, you can simply tell it to do an alternative route. It's just very flexible.
The screen could be a little bigger, but it's otherwise easy to see. The GPS device itself is light enough that you can carry it around with you, although it's not quite pocketable.
Of all the in-car GPS navigation systems I've tested, the Tomtom is definitely the best, by far. Its easy-to-use and flexible software makes it *the* choice if you are looking for an in-car GPS kit.
