Well, I did some research before buying a new TV. The Toshiba looked good from reviews, and in the store it seemed fine...I just sort of went ahead and bought it without studying the picture or sound. It's hard to tell from what they are showing on it in the store. They had an open-box buy for $200 and I was convinced it was tested by the store and would work fine (if not, I would take it back).
The image quality was very disappointing. It has a very noticeable shimmery, flicker type thing going on. It's VERY apparent when watching DVDs. Any sort of edge of something (a house, a pole, etc.) causes a multi-color shimmer. I am surprised no one has mentioned this. Maybe it has to do with the open box buy (however, I went and looked at the one on display and it seemed to do this---but maybe not as bad). So, I returned the thing and bought a Philips for 20 bucks less...and the picture is fantastic. Only thing about it is no 16:9 mode, but I can live without that.
