The Bottom Line:
buy, but shop for best price
Well after 10 years my trusty old 27" Sylvania analog TV died a quiet death during the night. I put it to bed and the next morning when we turned it on NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENED.So I went out to the store to look for another replacement.
I bought the 32" Toshiba 32av502r HDTV with Dolby sound in Aug'09 for $429. from 6TH Ave Electronics (they have a 30 day best price policy) and 29 days later found an ad for $398. Got my refund and continued to watch the unit.
This was really a shock to me (someone whose last TV was about 130 lbs) as I not only didn't need a second pair of hands to hold the other side of the unit but just lifted the box out of the van and into the house all by my lonesome. The unit came out of the box and as instructed I laid the unit face down on a soft blanket/towel right on the flat box it came in and let it hang off the edge of the box to install the stand it came with. It took 4 screws (provided) 2 into the bottom and 2 into the back. Since it measured only 31 1/2" side to side it fit into my 36" wall unit space easily.
I purchased a 6ft HDMI wire ($29.) and clipped it into the back of the tv and the cable box and I was off and running in under 15 minutes. Oh yeah also plugged it into the electrical outlet.
You can hook up all of your other equipment in the back, it has several options, (basic cable wire, HD1,HD2,video 1&2,S-video, and a PC connection), also there is another hook up on the left side below the buttons for on/off etc, etc. I have never used them since the remote is rather simple to work except that I have a Cablevision cable box and the remote doesn't work many of the cable box functions, and I only need the TV remote to change the TVs input function (when watching a DVD/VCR tape) and of course the DVD/VCR remote to control the disc/tape.
One of the better features I found on this unit is the MUTE button, on the first click it goes to 1/2 sound and the second click goes total mute. This comes in handy for those pesky commercials that up the sound level to make sure you listen to them. The sound level has a 0-60 range but I found a 20 is high enough for normal use.
I also bought a 3yr extended warranty for $49. which I hope never to use but with the price of new sets I like piece of mind for the next 3 years.
Of course I was interested in seeing what a difference an HD TV would be over my old analog. There IS a difference by leaps and bounds especially live sports and also going from a 27" curved screen to a 32" LCD flat screen, it was like that commercial ' reach out and touch someone ' well it really does feel like you could when they do close ups it's amazing.
Since I have had this TV since Aug'09 they had it on sale for Black Friday @ $299. so I was out at 5AM and in line for another unit for my son for Christmas and I'm sure he'll love it as much as I do.
The only glitch or con might be that you need to change the Input thru the remote since I use the cable remote for all TV watching this only comes into play for DVD/VCR watching since I am using the HDMI cable and my DVD/VCR doesn't have that connection so I cannot feed the cable box thru the DVD/VCR unit. A small price to pay for clear and easy setup .
