The Bottom Line:
I would repeat this purchase in a flash because the image handling capabilities and quality are superb!
We have just installed a Toshiba 34HFX83 flat screen TV. The results surpassed our highest expectations. A Sony KV-34XBR910 appealed to us at first, but it would not fit in our cabinet and was about $500 more than the Toshiba. After reviewing specs and looking at the images in store (with marginal signals at best) we went for the Toshiba. It was the only one we found (other than the Sony) that had the resolution and super wideband amplifier for handling complex signals well.
I would be surprised if the Sony could have produced better results, the Toshiba was that good! The only signal sources we have are standard cable and a Philips MX3900D DVD player, so I don't know how it performs with true HDTV sources.
The NTSC signal looked absolutely superb with exquisite detail and no ghosting. Even my wife who ignores these things was quite impressed with the results.
The DVD signal with ProScan output turned on produced excellent images without wiggley lines in motion or other aberrations. Of course, the results were more impressive than the NTSC signals, but both of them blew us away. I fed the DVD signal using three RGB cables for better detail.
Be prepared to have two people install this TV. Like all 34 inch widescreens, it is very heavy at 172 pounds.
The negatives for the machine are that it does not automatically detect the format of the image coming in and select the appropriate format for display. I'm not sure if other TVs have this capability or not.
The remote buzzes when lighted. I complained to Toshiba and the promptly sent me a new one that also buzzes. Not a real big deal, but a little lacking for a $1700 TV.
