What a headache

Pros Overall impressive picture
Cons Reliability Quality
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Great picture, sound is ok for normal viewing, reliability a concern. Quality does not compare to others such as Mitsubishi.
After researching MANY projection TV's, I opted for the Toshiba 40H80. Having worked at Best Buy's video department before, I knew the Toshiba quality reputation and picture quality. The 40H80 was the perfect size for my living room since a larger set would have been too big for the viewing area. However, the Toshiba quality DEFINITELY did not carry through to this product!

I purchased this at my local Best Buy store and brought it home myself since I wanted to make sure that care was used in loading and unloading the set. Setup was a breeze, but the picture setting to a while to get adjusted. The factory defaults are a bit weak. After hooking up my new Pioneer Elite progressive scan DVD player, I was not able to view a DVD at all when hooking it up to the HD inputs. The set just displayed a rapidly scrolling horizontal line (much like the vert. hold on older conventional sets). I called Toshiba to see if I was doing anything wrong, but they told me to contact my local authorized service center and gave me the name of several companies. Since the set was brand new and I didn't want what would turn out to essentially be a "renewed" set, I exchanged it for another new set (thanks to Best Buy's return policy). This new set worked great FOR A MONTH! Then the thing would default to the 4:3 mode on startup sometimes. You could tell when it was going to do it because the power light would come on, go off, and then come back on. It also would reset itself periodically during viewing (but this was rare). So I called Toshiba again and was given the names of the local service centers. They came out and had to take it into the shop to troubleshoot! After ONE MONTH, I got the set back and it works fine. Apparently they replaced a transformer and some other small part. I am really disappointed being on my second unit now since the main reason I bought Toshiba was the reputation for reliability. The latest problem is in the form of looking at a light tint of red on the screen when the only thing displayed should be a true black screen (DVD player on and no DVD in, or digital cable music channel, etc..) Service person told me that the red gun is brighter than the rest and that adjusting that down would make a negative impact on the quality of the color display so I just have to live with it. The set is almost 2yrs old now

I will admit that the picture quality is very good, but that faint red background on the black screen is REALLY annoying and the overall quality is VERY POOR. This is definitely not the Toshiba I remember. I would look elsewhere when considering this product!

The sound is lacking, but let's face it, why would you not have this set hooked up to a surround sound system? The sound is fine for general TV viewing but nothing that you would want to enjoy movies with.

Overall, I would NOT recommend this set, as the quality is substandard, although the picture is very nice when it's not a black screen. I'm looking to sell this one and get a Mitsubishi.
