Great TV, Terrible Service

Pros Beautiful picture and sound when the set works. Very good interface.
Cons Unreliable, Terrible Toshiba service.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Good TV when it works but avoid it because if there is a problem, Toshiba warranty service is worthless.
This is a fantastic TV when it works. It is essentially the same TV as last year's model the 42H81, so feel free to read those reviews for information about the picture quality, etc. The biggest difference is a a few tweaks with the channel selection menu.

I have a huge issue with the quality of Toshiba support, however. The set stopped working after I had owned it for less than three months. After a couple of trips out to my home by the local service center, they determined that the red picture tube was defective and they needed to order a new one. After that, it was nearly impossible to get anyone from the service center to return my calls. After repeated inquiries, I was told that the part was on backorder and they didn't know when it would come in. So I called Toshiba Customer Service and they said that they would look into it. After calling them a few times over the next few weeks (they kept telling me to call back in a couple of days), they said that they had no information and that I would just have to wait until they heard something, whenever that might be. Meanwhile, I had to cancel my Superbowl party and here we are in the second week of February (SEVEN weeks after my initial service call) and I have nothing more than a very expensive 42" paperweight sitting in my living room. So far, the attitude that I've gotten from Toshiba customer service is "We'll get to you when we get around to it."

Because of their lack of customer service, I would whole-heartedly recommend AGAINST purchasing a Toshiba TV.

UPDATE 2/10/03: I sent an email to Toshiba's customer support address that contained a copy of this review. I received a reply from Toshiba suggesting that I call their customer service. Apparently the author of that email, Jason, failed to read what I had written, otherwise he would have realized that I DID call customer service several times.
