The Bottom Line:
I am a very picky TV viewer. This Toshiba 46XV540U exceeds my expectations. It is as good as my Sony and costs less. Buy this TV!
Summary: I originally planned on buying a Plasma, but after doing research about them, I discovered what was needed to prevent burn-in. For a slightly better black level of the Plasma (would I even notice?) I decided not to go in this direction. I then moved forward to buy a Sony, as I have two Sony TVs now, which are great. But I needed a TV for my bedroom so I didn't have too much $$. My main Sony TV is a 120Hz, 1080p/24 display and I didn't want to settle for anything less. I saw the Toshiba at Costco for $1199. After doing extensive research I bought the Toshiba. After using a DVD with the THX setup to do initial color, tint, brightness and contrast settings, the Toshiba is terrific. I watch a lot of sports and with the 120Hz display I only see rock-solid images. The tests state that Toshiba does a better job than Sony and Samsung on 120Hz, so I figured how could I go wrong. I still watch a lot of SD material and I was concerned how well the Toshiba would display this. Fear not! The Toshiba has a great image processor and standard-def looks just fine. Just ask my wife who watches a lot of standard-def HGTV on this Toshiba. The Toshiba speakers give very good sound, especially for the bedroom. Also, the Toshiba has a function called "Dynalight" where it brightens the image when the room is bright, then it darkens the image at night. I didn't think this would be good, but it is, but I have it set to "Low". The TV also has a setting called LCD Backlight, which sets the overall brightness of the display. I wonder if the first poster who said the Toshiba imagae didn't "pop" had this set too high, as it would wash-out the picture. Blu-Ray films look stunning, especially since this Toshiba matches the default Blu-Ray film output of 1080p/24 frames per second. One great thing about this Toshiba is that the picture looks great in my bright bedroom, unlike a Plasma where you need to darken the room. The Toshiba has a matte glass display, which helps eliminate reflections. Most Samsungs have glossy displays, which act like mirrors. That would drive me nuts! The viewing angle is also good on the Toshiba. I can sit anywhere and see a crisp, bright image. My fear that I was settling for a second-rate LCD is unfounded. This Toshiba is a great TV!!
