The Bottom Line:
Although this is a year overdue, Bang for buck, you cannot do much better than Toshiba, and believe me, we shopped around.
Although this isn't a new model, it can still be found in stores. We had originally started shopping for an HDTV in the 36" department. However, when it came to dimensions to fit our existing entertainment center, nothing that big would fit. Also the bigger the standard TV, the deeper it gets. We then happened on this particular HDTV purely by accident. It was in the middle of the store, ,in harsh light, playing a demo of Star Trek Insurrection.
Viewing angle was like nothing I was used to from any RPTV. 160 degrees left and right (in bright light). I sat in front of it and the picture was amazing. By far more crisp than the RCA 55" that was beside it. (Mind you it, (RCA) was not HDTV capable)
We then started the homework. Online, message forums, newsgroups, and bang for buck, we couldn't do much better. We were sold.
Once we got it home about a month later, out of the box it was great. After a few weeks I picked up Video Essentials to fine tune the picture as well as tweaking the convergence in service mode. Once integrated into the home theater we could not ask for much better in the same price range.
Although it is in 4:3 ratio, we had gotten used to watching movies on our 27" in 16:9 and once you start getting into a movie, those bars above and below the picture aren't a problem. With a 50", it's even less noticeable.
We love it. We would definitely buy another Toshiba. (Although I wouldn't tell him, it's better than by brother-in-law's 63" standard RPTV :)). A friend of the family also bought the same TV as us a few months later...
--- UPDATE --- 22 Aug 2003 ---
We had moved across the country from Ontario to Alberta back in April... cold cold April. The TV was one of the last few items to get loaded onto the moving van. From there (near Ottawa) it went across the country to Edmonton, Alberta and straight into unheated storage. There my poor TV sat until 15 June when we finally found our house and moved in. Movers loaded our stuff from the storage facility and into the new house on the 23rd of June.
So by this point the TV had moved and bumped around a fair bit. I was slightly concerned about its well being. We finally finished construction of the Home-Theatre and moved the TV into its final resting area and wired it up.
I was impressed. Picture quality was near perfect. Popped in a DVD changed to one of the HDTV modes. I spent about 20 minutes adjusting the convergence in "Service Mode". Since then we've enjoyed numerous movies without problems.
The picture remains as brilliant as always.
Those of you concerned with the ever feared "burn in" problem... don't be! Before we moved here, it was our main source of television watching. Everything from kids programming to the "War in Iraq". Yes those news tickers along the bottom of the screen had me concerned. I imagine if it was on 24-7 it would have been a problem. ZERO burn in
So after 18 months, we are REALLY satisfied. If your looking for one of these models in particular, the price would be MUCH lower than it was when we bought ours. Go nuts and get it. You will not be disappointed. Sorry for the "extra" length.
