The Bottom Line:
Stay away form rear projection TVs unless you don't mind the repair bills and delays.
We bought the Toshiba 50h82 for $1800 and had for it for 20 days before the color adjustment went out giving a very wavy picture. We called for service and was told it would take several weeks to get the part needed. We then remembered that we could take it back to Best Buy and just have it replaced since we had owned for less than 30 days. Best Buy was very helpful, came out and picked up the old unwatchable TV and brought us a new H82. This one worked for about 3 years and then the hyper board started going out. This caused a blurry picture for some period of time after the TV was turned on. As the months went by it took longer and longer for the blurriness to go away after it was turned on. Called the repair shop who for $100 told us we needed a new Toshiba hyper board, but that they were back ordered and it would be a couple of months to get the board. We ordered the board for $200 plus the $150 to install it. That was 3 months ago and the board is still back ordered and now not expected to be available for another couple of months. Based on what I have read on the internet Toshiba is terrible about replacement parts for these TVs and so I expect the board will never be available. In the meantime a few days ago the red convergence adjustment went out, so the picture now has two images with the red image about an inch below the other colors. Based on internet research this appears to be unrelated to the hyperboard problem and will be another $200 repair. So we started looking for another TV today. This will be a picture tube TV as we are done with rear projection. Our other TVs are picture tubes that we have owned for many years and we have never had any trouble with them (one of them is even a Toshiba). Toshiba has a very poor repair program and doesn't make parts available for this model anymore. This must be a ploy to sell new TVs, but I will never buy a Toshiba again.
